Already used in several international optical submarine and terrestrial transmission systems, MPB Communications Inc.’s RMH-Series ROPA equipment enables standard telecommunications terminals to span unrepeatered lengths greater than 500 km and data rates up to 2.5 Gb/s.

WDM Systems operating at 10 Gbs/s have also been designed.

The remotely-pumped unit consists of several meters of erbium doped fiber (EDF) spliced directly into the system fiber between 40 to 120 km from the receiving terminal site. Length and doping of the EDF are custom-designed to match the particular transmission system parameters and optimize performance and operating margin.

Several packaging options are available for the ROPA: MPB can supply a qualified splice box; or the fiber can be included into the cable itself a the cable suppliers' factory; or mounted in a terrestrial cable splice box.

Raman Pump Source
The optical power required to pump ROPA is provided by the RMH-Series' Raman Fiber Laser (RFL) or our patented Super Raman Pump (SRP)
These all-fiber Raman laser sources can produce pump powers of up to 1.3 W and upwards.

For less demanding applications, lower power models are available. All control and supervisory functions are fully integrated into the rest of the Long Reach Transport system and, once commissioned, the system requires no customer intervention.

The RFL and/or SRP can accommodate the equipment required for one fiber pair operating between STM-1 and STM-16.
