The telecom subrack is also a stand-alone rack-mounted unit. Its network-related plug-in units (PIUs) include: alarm and status monitor and fiber integrity monitor with auto startup and safety shutdown. In addition, each pump laser diode is mounted as a separate PIU. This is a feature unique to MPB’s Raman telecom subrack product line. It allows the “hot swap” of a laser diode PIU in the event of a laser diode failure.

This maximizes system availability (since there is no interruption of service during a repair mission) and, coupled with the “soft failure” protection resulting from the built-in laser diode redundancy, results in a very low overall FIT value for the unit as a whole. This feature also has a dramatic impact on spares costs, since only laser diode PIUs need to be spared rather than a complete Raman module.

Applications for these system-ready, “plug and play” units include both conventional and cascaded distributed Raman amplification and remote EDFA pumping. The subrack can simultaneously be populated with RMH network elements from MPB’s selection of transponders, booster amplifiers and preamplifiers to provide a complete optical transport solution.
